    I'm a protestant but find myself agreeing with Trent more than with Parr on these issues. 1. There's nothing inherently wrong with venerating saints or asking for the saints to intercede for you. 2. There's absolutely nothing wrong with praying for the dead (we do this regularly). 3. Eucharist is the real presence of Christ, not a symbol. 4/5. We don't have the mortal/venial sin distinction, but we don't teach absolute assurance either. We believe in entire sanctification and purification through the Holy Spirit's work in us. 6. This is an issue with the Baptist view of 'faith alone'. Faith does not just mean a thought or belief, if you have faith in something, you will behave as though it were true. That's not a work of man, it's a work of the Holy Spirit on man. "Only God can get me to Heaven, but you and I can get ourselves to Hell" -- I agree with this statement 100%. Have a blessed day, Trent.

    One issue that comes up in the issue of the early church is that it appears only sins were confessed that had done public element, adultery for example but not every private sinful thought even if they were grave. It’s hard to reconcile that with the later insistence that all mortal sins need to be confessed to a minister. The Didache seems to be referring to the public confession made at the beginning of the liturgy which btw how come that absolution can’t suffice

    Either jimmy akin is a better apologist than his opponent but his faith is a false one and his opponent isn’t a very good apologist but his faith is the correct one than that’s the only way you can say the Protestant position is the right one on this issue. What was debated here clearly made jimmy seem the winner. In my humble opinion the Protestant position needs a better justification if it’s to make the catholic position false. Having said all that I do wonder sometimes what the God both sides claim to believe in makes of such nitpicking amongst the faithful. Perhaps the Devil understands that humans do love a nitpick and that’s the basis of his strategy against Christians.

    Baptizing and Forgiving Sins are completely different. I can't believe that example is even being compared. 1 John 2:23 is talking about the Trinity. It has NOTHING to do with the directive that people have to confess their sins to other people. When he gives the example of confessing "ὁμολογέω" (homologeō), the word is NOT exclusive to confessing to the public. It is also used in DIRECTLY confessing to GOD. Also, the exception to this word is found in Hebrews 13:15 where it is used for PRAISING. All those other examples of confessing have to do with confessing beliefs, fate, confessing something that is not. That is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than confessing your SINS to GOD. John 20:22-23 is merely saying that you can forgive. Anyone can forgive. ONLY JESUS CAN TAKE AWAY SIN so NO man is given authority nor the power to TAKE AWAY SIN. Read the last part of the verse : "if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." DOES THAT MEAN THAT YOU TAKE ON THE SINS OF OTHERS?? Please! Just stop it!! It's very dangerous how this guy is trying to make scripture fit his narrative. I'll stick to directly praying to the ultimate mediator. JESUS. He is our PRIEST AND KING, OUR WONDERFUL COUNSELOR. I'm not going to substitute HIM with a priest who could be thinking about molesting children while hearing my confessions...

  • @vigilantezack
    @vigilantezack 10 годин тому

    You confess your sin to the person you sinned against. Since all sin is ultimately a sin against God, we can confess to him as well. Yes, it's very important to confess to other humans when they are involved. Your priest is not involved. It's not required to confess to some 3rd party agent like a priest who is neither the harmed party nor God, as they don't receive or forgive your sins and confessions, neither on behalf of God nor on behalf of the offended party you sinned against. RC is always trying to insert mediators when scripture is clear there is only one mediator. Stop trying to "go through" unnecessary mediators.

    Protestant response. Trent you really being generous calling these books “Christian”. The first three books in particular are written by people that most Protestants (and I would think Roman Catholics would agree) consider heretical. 1Peter2:9 - refers to the “chosen generation” of believers as equaling the “royal priesthood”. One of the strong difficulties with the Catholic interpretation of priest is how a fraternity of clergy priests are segmented from the lay priests. As seriously as the Catholic views confession, the idea that a priest can be banished, permanently, from the segmented fraternity of clergy priests seems to deny Gods ability to forgive and restore. Especially in light of Christs explicit instructions to forgive in Matthew 18:21-22. The severity of that punishment would not be possible, without the segmentation of the priest hood of believers. To that end, it is a spiritual risk not to forgive said priest, lest you yourself not be forgiven (Matthew 6:15). To declare a priest has not been reinstated, at this time, (in sincerity) is one thing, but to declare a priest will never be reinstated, and teach this as a religious requirement universal, seems incredibly scripturally dangerous.

    • @krkenheimer
      @krkenheimer 10 годин тому

      I really do not understand your point. The priesthood is a ministry, just like being a doctor or lawyer. being fired from your job has nothing to do with how God views you, it is simply a statement about your competency to do a specific task. A priest can be barred from entering the priesthood simply by being way too clumsy or forgetful, this has nothing to do with God's view on someone, much less forgiveness.

    • @billbrown1353
      @billbrown1353 10 годин тому

      @@krkenheimer Unfortunately, I do not think that our understanding of the priesthood can be so easily paralleled to any secular profession. Furthermore, the spiritual lens by which believers view each other is in light of Gods view as explained in Holy Scripture. So if all are priests, by what authority does one priest have, and this is the foundational concern, to “permanently” remove a priest from service. The permanence seems to be incompatible in light of the certainty of Gods forgiveness. If God has forgiven, who is man to permanently bar the priest, who has otherwise proven himself qualified. Permanent ban = permanent remembrance of the sin of breaking confession. When God forgives he remembers no more.

    • @krkenheimer
      @krkenheimer 9 годин тому

      @@billbrown1353in a sense all Christians are priests and we cannot be removed from this priesthood except by our own decision. The Catholic priesthood institution is a ministry, a profession. They serve us. There is not much else to say. Yes, they especially devote themselves to the serving of God and the Church, but it is just a ministry/job. As for authority, the Bible clearly lays out Peter to be the authority over the disciples, so too the Pope is the authority over the other bishops, etc etc. I recommend you read the earliest of Church Fathers and you would see they are unanimous in their institutional view of the Church from which you can be added/removed on account of Church officials

      And Jesus taught that the disciples have the power to forgive sins. John 20:19-23 Jesus Appears to the Disciples [19] On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” [20] When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. [21] Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” [22] And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. [23] If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” James teaches us that elders/priests also had this power: James 5:14-15 [14] Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. [15] And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. And then James tells us to "confess our sins one to another): James 5:16 [16] Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. The word translated "elder" in James is the Greek work "presbyterous." The term priest is derived etymologically from the Greek word presbyteros (“elder”), of which it is a contraction, and it is equated with the Latin word sacerdos (the Roman officiant at the sacrifices and sacred rites). So, yes, the Bible teaches priest have the power to forgive sins and directs to "confess to one another."

      In James 5 The priests are gathered, so The priesthood is there, and it says If he has sins, let him be forgiven, not already forgiven, just because one believes. But you might ask, why it says confess to one another, and the reason is, because at that time most Confessions were public, and the penitent Confesses the sins not only to the priest, but to the whole parish.

    That just makes me feel like God doesn’t want me to talk directly to Him. Pray through Jesus, pray through Mary, pray through the saints, pray through the priest. This is why I don’t get Christians. How can you feel okay with the idea that you can’t talk to God directly or ask for his forgiveness directly?

    • @krkenheimer
      @krkenheimer 11 годин тому

      1. Jesus IS God, so if you pray to Him, you are praying to God because... He is God... no ifs or buts 2. Catholics do absolutely pray directly to Christ and should perform an examination of consciousness regularly, where they confess their daily failings to God directly, not even to mention all the other ways Catholics pray directly to God. Also, in confession you are not directing it towards the priest, you are speaking with God. This is explicit. The priest is there as a witness and as a support, but what you say should be directed towards God. You are NOT praying through the priest. Never. 3. As for praying to others, none of that is a requirement, but different people find comfort in different practices and feel like one particular saint may be more receptive and fitting to oneself or a specific need. When you are looking for beef, you go to the butcher, but when you need clothes, you go to a clothes shop. Also different people like different clothes. This is just so say that it is individual and context specific. If you prefer praying to our Lord, then that is good also. People tend to like saints because they are more relatable (many of them struggled with sins and other things just as we do), personable, and very inspiring for what Christians should aim towards. God so loves His Mother and all the others in Heaven, why shouldn't we?

    Protestant here, baptism does not save, it is just a public announcement of what has already occurred. So if a priest cannot save, I still dont understand why I *need* to go to them. If only God saves, why do I need a mediator between me and God? Jesus is my one and only mediator, 1 Timothy 2:5. I can confess my sins to anyone and they to me, we can help eachother. Which verses mention the succession of apostolic authority? A way for the apostles to know whose sins to forgive, without confession, would be divine inspiration. God knows all man's sins and would be able to guide them. I dont see why this is implausible. Your last point at least doesn't say that we have to go to a priest, only that it can be comforting, so is it a choice in Catholicism to confess to a priest or a requirement?

You take the Bible seriously and do not water it down, however ridiculous anyone else thinks you are and it seems considering contemporaneous science, because the Bible says so, and the Bible is the literal Word of God. I am also YEC, 100%. But then you get to the New Testament and everything is just a metaphor, "this is my Body" -> metaphor, "unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God" -> just a symbol, "you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" -> Peter's faith??. I just find that... honestly... pathetic and I cannot take you seriously when you will read the Old Testament literally with all it's unbelievable (but true) stories, but will not apply that same hermeneutic to the New Testament, "this is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?". But our Lord has said: "What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?"

    If you pay close attention, Trent is reverentially incoherent. When critiquing contrarian voices, they succumb to arguing from silence. However, when Trent claims that “nowhere in the NT…” he too argues from silence, but somehow his fallacy is somehow valid. The church’s prayer book is the Psalms. David clearly exemplifies acknowledge and confessing sin directly to God without any intermediaries: “I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD”; And you forgave the guilt of my sin” (NASB 32:5). Trent also misses the immediate referent in view when John uses the pronoun “He [Jesus] is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 Jn 1:9). There is no discernible other subject in that passage other than the pronoun which is an undeniable reference to Jesus. If Jesus has authority to forgive sins on earth, as Trent rightly argued, then it seems logically inescapable that you confess sins to whom the transgression was made against. Trent has yet to provide any argument for thinking that it is logically valid to confess sin or offenses to someone other than the offended party. Lastly, everything he says about public confession, and confessing sins to one another is consistent with the aforementioned.

      David confesses his sin to Nathan and Nathan gives him absolution. And James and the Gospel of John explicitly teach forgiveness of sins coming through means other than direct confession to God.

    • @krkenheimer
      @krkenheimer 10 годин тому

      No, it is not an argument from silence. "Therefore confess the sins to one another". It is funny you should mention David as: "And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord.". You, as so many others, seem to misunderstand Catholic confession. We do directly ask our Lord for forgiveness, this is not some hidden fact, it is in all the acts of contrition (said after the enumeration of sins). We do not ask the priest for forgiveness but the Lord. If private prayers for forgiveness are valid, so is this. There are additional reasons for the priest to be a witness, but at its core, you are DIRECTLY asking God for forgiveness for your sins. Only He forgives sins, but He has, as is written in Scripture, given the Church special authority over remission of sins, which He, because He so loves Her, accepts. This is not to say Catholics can ever presume to be forgiven by God, but in Confession we enter anew into the Body of the Church from which we separated ourselves through our sin. As for only confessing sins that pertain to the one offended against, nothing of the sort is mentioned in the above verse. This is simply an assertion made by you. Yes, there are other passages that additionally tell us to reconcile with our brothers, but this verse is not about that at all. As Catholics we also believe all sins and all our shortcomings offend God, so it does not suffice to ask the other for forgiveness, but we must also confess to God. We also believe Christians are mystically united in one body and hurting ourselves through our own private sin, so hurts the entire Body and must therefore be treated as a public offense

      @@Vaughndaleoulaw Wrong! Nathan did NOT give him absolution: “Nathan replied, “Yes, but the LORD has forgiven you, and you won't die for this sin” (2 Sam 12:13). Nathan simply *affirmed* what was already done by God when David confessed his sin directly to God (see Ps 51) without any intermediaries. My last sentence in my original post is consistent with your last thought.

    Have to push back on the critique on the belief meme. I agree with Trent saying " atheism is not a belief" is sloppy and false. Atheism is a belief that a god does not exist. I think many atheist fall into here is they are trying to corner theist by saying, "Atheism is not a belief, but you theist have a positive belief so you have the burden of proof". But atheism is not a SYSTEM of belief. We don't claim we know how the world works. Some atheists are scientific, superstitious, nihilist, stoic. It is not like Christianity where you have a system explaining human nature, origin of the world, communal identity. Also have to push back on the agnostic bit. There is no neutral " I don't know" there is "I don't know but I believe" or "I don't know, but I do not believe". Those two positions put you on the atheist/ theist camps.
